Congo River
A photographic journey along the Congo River, one of Africa's most powerful waterways and the lifeline of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Stretching through the heart of Central Africa, the Congo River connects remote villages, bustling river ports and communities whose daily lives depend on its waters. In a vast country where road infrastructure is limited, the river remains essential for transportation, trade, fishing and everyday survival.
Through this long-term documentary photography project, photographer Kris Pannecoucke travelled along the Congo River to capture realities of contemporary Congo. The journey offers an intimate portrait of life along the river, revealing its importance not only as a transport route but also as a cultural, economic and social lifeline.
The project resulted in the photobook Fleuve Congo River, published in 2017 by Picha Publishing.
